US VP Harris Sets to Attend ASEAN Summit in Jakarta

Gedung Putih mengumumkan, Selasa (22/8) Wakil Presiden Amerika Serikat (AS) Kamala Harris akan hadir mewakili AS ke KTT ASEAN di Jakarta pada 4-7 September. Sedangkan, Presiden Joe Biden akan menghadiri KTT G20 di New Delhi, India pada 7-10 September.

Penasihat Keamanan Nasional Gedung Putih, Jake Sullivan, mengumumkan keputusan rencana perjalanan ini dengan menyatakan bahwa Presiden Biden tengah menegaskan kembali komitmen AS terhadap forum G20, sekaligus menyatakan kesiapan AS menjadi tuan rumah forum tersebut pada 2026. 

Menanggapi komentar dan pertanyaan terhadap ketidakhadiran Presiden Biden di ASEAN Summit dan komitmen AS di kawasan Asia-Pasifik, Sullivan mengutip bahwa AS berkomitmen untuk terus memperkuat posisinya di kawasan melalui beberapa pertemuan sebelumnya yang dihadiri Presiden Biden sejak 2021.

The White House announced on Tuesday (8/22) that US Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the ASEAN Summit as the country’s representative in Jakarta on September 4–7, while President Joe Biden will attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, on September 7–10.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan announced the decision to make the trips, stating that President Biden reaffirms the US commitment to the G20 as well as expressing the US's readiness to host the forum in 2026.

In response to comments and questions about President Biden’s absence from the ASEAN Summit and the US commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, Sullivan cited that the US has continued to strengthen its position in the region through several previous meetings that President Biden has attended since 2021.
